Compaction is the whole trick
Every asphalt estimate lives or dies on one distinction: loose mix versus rolled pavement. The paver lays hot material fluffy, the roller squeezes about a quarter of that height back out, and only the compacted result — at roughly 145 lb per cubic foot — is what the specification, the plant ticket and this calculator all mean. Mixing the two states is the classic way to over-order by 25% or, worse, build a pavement thinner than designed.
Tonnage then becomes a clock as much as a quantity. Hot mix is perishable — it leaves the plant near 300°F and must reach density before it cools — so the truckload count here is really a schedule: how many arrivals the crew must sequence while the mat stays workable. A good estimate keeps trucks feeding the paver continuously; a bad one leaves half-cooled loads waiting or a hopper running empty mid-driveway.
How to use the asphalt calculator
- Pick the unit system. Thickness switches between inches and centimetres; the tonnage output stays in short tons and metric tonnes either way, since plants quote both.
- Enter the paved dimensions. Length and width of the finished surface. Widen driveways slightly at the road apron in your measurement — flared entries are routinely forgotten.
- Set the COMPACTED thickness. This tool works from finished, rolled thickness. Loose hot mix compresses roughly 25% under the roller, and the density figure already accounts for that.
- Add a waste allowance. Handwork at edges, transitions and cleanup consume material a plan never shows; 5% suits open rectangles, more for cut-up geometry.
- Enter truck capacity and price. Tandem dump trucks commonly haul 13–18 tons of hot mix. The load count tells you how deliveries will sequence on pour day.
- Read tonnage first. Asphalt plants sell by the ton — the tons line is the number you phone in, and the one your invoice will show.

Worked example
A 60 ft × 12 ft driveway at 3 in compacted with 5% waste: V = 720 × 0.25 = 180.00 ft³; with waste 189.00 ft³. Tonnage = 189 × 145 ÷ 2,000 = 13.70 tons — one 15-ton truckload. At $95 per ton the mix costs 13.7025 × 95 = $1,301.74, before base preparation, tack and laydown labour.

Things to keep in mind
- The base is half the pavement. Budget the compacted aggregate base with the gravel estimator — asphalt thickness cannot rescue a soft base.
- Edges fail first. Unsupported asphalt edges crumble under wheel loads; plan edge restraint or a shoulder of compacted stone.
- Plant minimums bite small jobs. Many plants set minimum tonnages or small-load surcharges; a neighbour\'s repair on the same delivery day can split the fee.
- Seal later, not sooner. Fresh pavement needs months to cure before its first sealcoat; sealing early traps volatiles and softens the mat.
- Slope for drainage. A 1–2% fall keeps water off the surface — ponding water strips the binder and ages asphalt fastest of all.
Frequently asked questions
How many tons of asphalt do I need per square foot?
At a 3 in compacted depth, hot-mix asphalt runs about 0.019 tons per square foot — roughly 55 ft² per ton. The general relationship: tons = area × thickness (ft) × 145 ÷ 2,000. Because thickness sits inside the multiplication, quoting coverage without stating depth is meaningless, and plants will always ask for both dimensions and lift thickness before pricing.
What thickness of asphalt does a driveway need?
A residential driveway over a proper compacted aggregate base typically gets 2–3 in of compacted hot mix, often placed as a single lift. Where heavier vehicles park — RVs, work trucks — 4 in in two lifts is the durable answer. The base course under the asphalt matters at least as much: asphalt is a flexible pavement, and it flexes to failure over a weak base.
Why does the calculator ask for compacted thickness?
Because the density figure — 145 lb per cubic foot — describes rolled, finished pavement, and tonnage is what you pay for. Contractors think in compacted lift thickness and let the paver lay the extra loose depth (roughly a quarter more) that the roller squeezes out. Entering loose thickness here would double-count the compaction and over-order by about 25%.
How many square feet does one truckload of asphalt cover?
A 15-ton tandem load at 3 in compacted covers close to 825 ft²; at 2 in, about 1,240 ft². Load counts drive the day's logistics — a paving crew wants trucks arriving as the hopper empties, since hot mix cools on a schedule that does not negotiate. That is why this tool reports whole truckloads rather than leaving you to divide.
Can asphalt be laid over an existing driveway?
Overlays are common and economical when the existing surface is structurally sound: a 1.5–2 in compacted lift over a cleaned, tack-coated old pavement. They fail when used to hide alligator cracking or base failure — the old cracks telegraph through within a couple of seasons. Milling the failed areas first, or rebuilding the base, is what separates a ten-year overlay from a two-year one.
What temperature does hot mix need, and does weather matter?
Mix leaves the plant near 300°F and must be compacted before it cools below roughly 185°F, which is why haul distance, lift thickness and air temperature all constrain paving day. Thin lifts in cold wind lose workable time fast. Reputable crews stop paving in cold or wet conditions rather than roll a mat that will never reach density — a short delay beats a short pavement life.
