How to Estimate Concrete for Any Project

Concrete is sold by volume but poured against a reality that never matches the drawing. This guide walks through estimating any pour from first principles — the shapes, the wastage, and the ready-mix-versus-bags decision that quietly sets your cost.

Every concrete estimate answers two questions in sequence: how much material the geometry demands, and how much extra reality will consume before the pour is struck off. Get the first wrong and the error multiplies — thickness entered in feet instead of inches is a twelve-fold mistake that has stranded more than one crew mid-slab. Skip the second and you run short with the truck already gone. The method below is the one professional estimators use, reduced to its essentials.

Start with the shape, in consistent units

All concrete volume reduces to length × width × depth, expressed in feet, giving cubic feet. The trap is that plans state large dimensions in feet and small ones — slab thickness, footing width — in inches, so the single most important discipline is converting everything to one unit before multiplying. A four-inch slab is 0.333 feet thick, not four; a wall that treats it as four feet orders a driveway's worth of concrete for a patio.

Different shapes need different geometry. A slab or footing is a simple prism. A round column is π × radius² × height. Solid-poured stairs stack like a staircase of prisms — the first step one riser tall, the second two, and so on — which sums to rise × run × width × n(n+1)/2 for n steps. Convert cubic feet to how concrete is actually sold

Ready-mix is ordered in cubic yards, and one cubic yard is 27 cubic feet — so a 44-cubic-foot pour is 1.63 yards. Bagged concrete is sold by yield: an 80 lb bag makes about 0.60 cubic feet mixed, a 60 lb bag about 0.45, both from manufacturer data. Those yields are why bag counts climb fast — a single cubic yard is 45 of the large bags, which is genuinely heavy work. Always round bag counts up: a pour that comes up half a bag short is a cold joint waiting to happen.

Add wastage before you order, not after

The geometric volume is a floor, never the order quantity. Spillage, over-excavation, uneven sub-grade and the concrete that clings to the mixer all consume material the drawing cannot see. For a formed slab on a compacted, level base, 5–10% covers it. Excavated footings and trenches deserve 10–15%, because soil never breaks along the neat lines on the plan. Soft or rutted ground justifies more still. This allowance is not padding — it is the difference between finishing the pour and making an expensive emergency call for a short load.

Ready-mix or bags: the one-yard rule of thumb

The break-even sits around a single cubic yard. Below it, bagged mix usually wins once you count a ready-mix truck's minimum-load and short-load fees, and you avoid a delivery window. Above it, ready-mix wins on cost, on consistency, and on your back — and it comes with a batch ticket stating the design strength, something hand-mixed bags can never provide. For any structural pour, that ticket alone often settles the question regardless of volume.

What the estimate deliberately ignores

Reinforcing steel displaces concrete, but so little — well under 1% of a residential pour — that estimators ignore it entirely, safely inside the wastage allowance. What rebar changes is your base preparation and your cost lines, not the concrete order. Likewise, a small landing on a stair or a thickened slab edge is worth adding as a separate small volume rather than trying to fold into the main shape.

The mistakes that blow estimates apart

A handful of errors account for most concrete orders that go badly wrong, and all of them are avoidable. The first is the unit slip already mentioned — thickness in feet instead of inches — which inflates the order twelve-fold and is caught only by a sanity check against common sense: a residential slab is a few yards, not a few dozen. The second is estimating gross area over openings or irregular shapes rather than breaking the pour into clean rectangles and summing them. The third is forgetting that the sub-grade is rarely the neat plane on the drawing; low spots and over-dig quietly swallow concrete that the geometric volume never counted.

The subtler trap is treating the wastage allowance as optional padding to be trimmed when the number looks high. It is not padding — it is the modelled difference between the ideal shape and the real pour, and cutting it to save a few dollars is how jobs end one wheelbarrow short with the finishers waiting. A worked estimate, end to end

Take a patio slab 12 ft long, 10 ft wide, 4 inches thick, with a 10% allowance. Volume is 12 × 10 × 0.333 = 40 cubic feet; with wastage, 44. That is 44 ÷ 27 = 1.63 cubic yards, or 74 of the 80 lb bags (44 ÷ 0.60, rounded up). At a typical yard price, ready-mix runs a few hundred dollars; 74 bags is a hard afternoon.
